５．３ 競争心

アンケート調査では、人々が他人をどう意識しているかを尋ねている。それらの質問から、競争意識や利他性がどのように幸福感と関連しているかを調べることが可能である。まず、「ほかの人の生活水準を意識している」というステートメントが「ぴったり当てはまる」（１）か「全くあてはらない」（５）かを５段階で訊いている。それぞれを回答した人の平均の幸福度を示したのが、図１８である。この図を見ると、他人の生活を意識しているほど不幸であることが明瞭に見て取れる。この結果は相対所得仮説と関連づけて理解することができるかもしれない。

５.４ 利他性

次に、「あなたが1000円を出すと9万9000円の補助が政府から出て、合計10万円があなたの知らない貧しい人に渡されます。あなたはこの1000円を出しますか。」という問と、「あなたが1000円を出すと9万9000円の補助が政府から出て、合計10万円があなたの親しい人の中で貧しい人に渡されます。あなたはこの1000円を出しますか。」という問に対して、両方共に「出さない」と答えた人を１，どちらかに「出す」どちらかに出さないと答えた人を２，両方に「出す」と答えた人を３とし、それを、利他的な程度が小さい、中間、大きい、として、それぞれに属する人の幸福度の平均値を示したのが、図１９である。利他的な程度が大きい人ほど幸福であることが見て取れる。4もっとも、これは、幸福な人ほど、他人を思いやる余裕があるという、逆の因果を示している可能性があることに注意しなければならない。この二つの質問は、他人を気にするということと他人を思いやるということがかなり違った意味合いを持っていることを示していて興味深い。
