“　宗教的な理由もあり、ヨーロッパでは古代ローマ時代以来、大量の奴隷を使うことはなかった。原則として、キリスト教徒が同じキリスト教徒を奴隷にすることは禁じられていたからである。しかし、アフリカとの奴隷貿易に対する神学上の反対意見については、彼らは聞こえないふりをしたか、あるいは怪しげな論拠を次々に挙げることで、批判をかわした。まず、ヨーロッパ人は奴隷を買い、キリスト教徒に改宗させることで、アフリカの黒人をイスラム教の誤った教義から救出するのだ、という主張がなされた。続いて別の論が登場する。神学者のなかに、アフリカの黒人は完全な人間とは言えず、キリスト教徒になる資格がないのだから、奴隷にしてもいい、と主張する者が現れたのである。また、アフリカの黒人はノアの息子「ハムの子供」であり、彼らを奴隷にすることは聖書が認めている、と唱える者もいた（訳注――聖書に、ノアがハムの息子カナンに対して「カナンは呪われよ。奴隷の奴隷となり、兄たちに仕えよ」と言う一節がある）。少なくとも当初は、こうした狡猾な論理が社会的に広く受け入れられていたわけではなかったが、大西洋上の島々は本土から遠く離れていたため、奴隷の強制労働の事実が人々の耳に入らないよう、うまく隠しておくことができたのである。一五〇〇年までに、奴隷の導入によりマデイラ諸島はいくつかの圧搾機と二〇〇〇人の奴隷を備えた、世界最大の砂糖の輸出地になっていた。”
